Short answer

Bronchitis can reduce appetite through infection, fatigue, coughing and changes in taste, but ongoing poor intake needs attention.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common reason
Fatigue, coughing, fever and altered taste can suppress appetite.
Practical approach
Small portions and regular sips are often easier than large meals.
Red flag
Very low fluid intake or much less urination needs prompt advice.

Why appetite can change

During bronchitis, coughing, fever, tiredness, nausea or a blocked nose can make food less appealing. Mucus and throat irritation may make swallowing uncomfortable, while breathlessness can make eating feel tiring. Appetite often returns as the respiratory illness settles, but the cause may be different when digestive or emotional symptoms dominate.

Gastroenteritis can cause appetite loss with vomiting or diarrhoea. Influenza and COVID-19 can also cause marked tiredness and reduced appetite. Gastritis or a peptic ulcer may cause upper abdominal discomfort, while depression can affect eating in a different pattern. These possibilities need clinical context rather than self-diagnosis.

How to keep nourished

Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, especially if fever or sweating is present. Choose small portions of soft, familiar foods such as soup, yoghurt, eggs, rice or fruit, and eat when appetite is strongest. Avoid smoke and strong cooking smells if they worsen nausea.

Monitor hydration by noticing thirst, dizziness, dry mouth and how often you urinate. Do not force large meals. A pharmacist or clinician can advise about medicines that may upset the stomach or affect appetite.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, confusion, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools or severe abdominal pain. Arrange prompt medical advice if you cannot keep fluids down, urinate much less than usual, become increasingly weak, or continue losing appetite as the cough improves.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the appetite change fits your respiratory illness or suggests another problem, and whether you need an examination or testing. Mention your fluid intake, urine changes, weight trend, abdominal symptoms, nausea, medicines and any fever or breathing difficulty.
