Bronchitis cough: what to know

Inflammation makes the breathing tubes more sensitive, so talking, cool air, smoke, or activity can trigger coughing. Mucus may change in amount or colour without proving that an antibiotic is needed. A cough can follow a viral illness and gradually settle, but the same symptom also occurs with a common cold, allergic rhinitis, asthma, acid reflux, or chronic cough. Bronchiectasis can cause a longer-lasting productive cough and needs a different assessment.

Rest when tired, drink enough fluid to avoid dehydration, and avoid smoking, vaping, and smoky rooms. Warm drinks may soothe an irritated throat. Do not start leftover antibiotics or cough medicines prescribed for someone else. Note whether the cough is dry or productive, what triggers it, and whether sleep or exercise is affected.

Arrange medical advice if the cough is worsening, persists beyond the expected recovery, or is accompanied by breathlessness, chest pain, fever, wheezing, or marked weakness. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, fainting, or coughing up blood. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with significant heart or lung disease may need earlier assessment.
