What should you know about bronchitis and strep throat?

Bronchitis commonly brings a persistent cough, mucus, chest irritation, and sometimes a mild temperature. Strep throat is caused by a bacterial infection in the throat and can present with a sudden sore throat, painful swallowing, fever, and swollen glands. Tonsillitis may occur alongside a throat infection. Cough, runny nose, or hoarseness can suggest a viral airway illness, but symptoms overlap and cannot replace an examination or throat testing when indicated.

Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Avoid sharing cups and wash hands regularly. Arrange a GP consultation when throat pain is severe, fever persists, swallowing is difficult, or symptoms are not improving. Antibiotic treatment may be offered when strep throat is confirmed or strongly suspected; do not use another person’s prescription.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, one-sided throat swelling, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Same-day assessment is sensible for marked dehydration, persistent high fever, or a child who is unusually sleepy. A worsening cough with chest pain or breathlessness also needs prompt review.
