Why bronchiolitis may seem worse at night

Short answer
Bronchiolitis may seem worse at night because lying down and tiredness can make mucus, cough, and breathing effort more noticeable.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why nights can feel harder
With bronchiolitis, swollen small airways and mucus can make breathing noisy. Lying flat may make nasal blockage and secretions feel more troublesome, while a quiet bedroom makes cough or wheeze easier to notice. Tired children may also feed less effectively and have less energy to clear mucus.
Nighttime worsening does not by itself show that the illness has changed cause. Track the child's breathing and behaviour, not only the sound. [Cough](/symptoms/cough/) and [Wheezing](/symptoms/wheezing/) explain these symptoms.
Making the night safer
Keep the child away from smoke and vaping aerosols. Before sleep and feeds, gently clear visible nasal mucus. Offer manageable feeds and fluids while the child is awake, and check regularly for breathing effort and alertness. Hold the child upright while awake and supervised; do not use unsafe sleep positioning or pillows. Follow any clinician-provided plan, and ask whether [Nebuliser Treatment](/treatments/acute-and-urgent-care/nebuliser-treatment/) is relevant.
Night warning signs
Seek emergency help if breathing pauses, the child is gasping, the ribs or neck pull in, lips look blue or grey, or the child is hard to wake. Seek prompt review when feeds are repeatedly missed, wet nappies decrease, wheezing or cough is worsening, or the child seems exhausted. A [Child Health Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/child-health-consultation/) can provide an examination.
What to discuss
Ask how often to check overnight, which breathing signs are urgent, how to protect sleep and feeding, and whether another condition could be contributing. Describe what changes at night and how the child behaves between episodes.

Questions people ask
Is nighttime coughing alone an emergency?
Not always, but coughing with hard breathing, colour change, exhaustion, or poor feeding needs urgent assessment.
Can I prop up my baby's mattress?
Use safe sleep arrangements and ask a clinician for advice; pillows and unsafe positioning can create hazards.
