Bronchiectasis and spirometry: what to know

During spirometry, you breathe into a mouthpiece connected to a device. After a full breath in, you blow out as forcefully and completely as instructed. The test can show whether airflow is limited and helps compare breathing function over time. It does not show the shape of the airways, so it cannot replace imaging when bronchiectasis is being assessed. A persistent cough, breathlessness, or coughing up phlegm may lead to lung-function testing, but spirometry results must be interpreted with your history and examination.

Follow the clinic’s instructions about inhalers, smoking, meals, and strenuous activity because preparation can affect the result. Wear comfortable clothing and tell the tester if you feel unwell, have chest pain, or recently had an infection. You may need to repeat the breathing manoeuvre several times so the team can check that the readings are consistent. A bronchodilator may sometimes be used before another reading; the clinician will explain what the comparison means for your care.

Do not wait for a routine spirometry appointment if you have severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, chest pain, or substantial bleeding when coughing. Contact your clinician promptly if phlegm increases, changes colour, or comes with fever or a clear decline in your usual breathing. The test is one part of assessment and should not delay help for acute symptoms.

Ask what your measurements indicate, whether a bronchodilator comparison is planned, and how the result will change your care. Check whether you also need a chest X-ray or other imaging, how often lung function should be reviewed, and which symptoms should trigger an earlier appointment.
