What should you know about bronchiectasis blood in sputum?

Long-term airway widening can make the airway lining more prone to irritation. Repeated forceful coughing or inflammation during an infection may then leave small streaks of blood in mucus. Blood can look bright red, pink, or brown, and it may be mixed through phlegm or appear on its own. This symptom does not identify one cause by itself. A clinician may also need to consider other lung or throat problems, so describe exactly what you saw rather than assuming it is part of bronchiectasis.

Note when the bleeding began, how often it occurs, its appearance, and whether it followed coughing. Record changes in phlegm, fever, chest pain, breathlessness, or dizziness. Contact your clinician promptly for any new blood in sputum, even if it is only streaking. Do not smoke, and do not change prescribed medicines without advice. Your assessment may include examination, a chest X-ray, spirometry, and a phlegm sample or other tests chosen for your symptoms.

Call emergency services if you are coughing up a large or continuing amount of blood, struggling to breathe, feeling faint, confused, or developing severe chest pain. Seek same-day medical care if bleeding is recurring, increasing, or accompanied by fever or a clear deterioration in your breathing. Sit upright while waiting for help and note the colour and amount of blood. Do not drive yourself if you feel weak or breathless.
