What should you know about bronchiectasis and emphysema?

Bronchiectasis can leave mucus trapped in widened airways, leading to a persistent cough and repeated chest infections. Emphysema is a form of chronic lung damage in which the walls between air sacs are lost, reducing the area available for gas exchange. Having emphysema does not mean a person has bronchiectasis, and a person with bronchiectasis does not automatically have emphysema. Symptoms can overlap, so the diagnosis depends on the history, examination, breathing tests and imaging.

Arrange a clinical review if cough, phlegm or breathlessness is ongoing. A clinician may request a chest X-ray and spirometry, then consider other imaging or tests based on the findings. Airway-clearance techniques, prescribed inhalers, vaccinations and an individual plan for flare-ups may help. Avoiding tobacco smoke and keeping active within your limits can support lung function. Do not start antibiotics or change inhalers without medical advice.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, chest pain, or coughing up more than a small amount of blood. Contact a clinician promptly if fever, thicker or darker phlegm, wheezing or a clear change from your usual breathing suggests a chest infection. A new or worsening cough deserves assessment, especially when it interferes with sleep or daily activities.
