What should you know about broken skin eczema?

Atopic dermatitis weakens the skin barrier, leaving inflamed areas dry, cracked or raw. Scratching can open the surface further and allow irritants or germs to enter. Oozing, yellowish crusts, increasing warmth, swelling or tenderness can suggest infection rather than a routine flare. Darker marks may remain after inflammation settles; this is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Eczema can affect the face, hands, folds and other areas, so the appearance and care plan vary by site.

Rinse with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Apply a thick, plain moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp, repeating whenever dryness returns. Keep nails short and consider covering broken areas with a clean, non-stick dressing if clothing rubs them. Avoid fragranced products, harsh antiseptics and picking at crusts. A clinician may recommend a topical anti-inflammatory for the eczema and a separate treatment if infection is suspected. Do not place steroid cream on an open area unless a healthcare professional has advised you how to use it.

Arrange prompt medical advice for spreading redness, warmth, pus, rapidly worsening pain, extensive weeping or a fever. Seek urgent help if the skin becomes rapidly painful with blisters, or if you feel very unwell. A new flare that repeatedly breaks the skin, disrupts sleep or does not settle with your usual plan also deserves review. Bring a list of products and medicines used on the area so the clinician can identify irritation, allergy or infection.

Ask whether the open area is an eczema flare, contact reaction or infection; which cleanser, moisturiser and dressing suit its location; how to control itching, including night-time itching; and when to restart or adjust prescribed treatment.
