Broken Hand Plaster Cast: Care at Home

The hand contains several small bones and mobile joints, so a cast is shaped for the exact fracture. It may extend across the wrist or support particular fingers to block forces that could displace the break. Early swelling may lead the team to use a partial plaster support before fitting a more complete cast.

The clinician also checks finger alignment, tendon movement, skin wounds, sensation and circulation. Fractures that are rotated, displaced, unstable or open may need the bones repositioned or fixed rather than managed by plaster alone.

Elevate the hand as directed and remove rings from exposed fingers if the care team tells you to do so. Keep the plaster clean and dry, protect it during washing, and never place anything beneath the padding. Avoid leaning on the cast or using the injured hand for carrying, pushing or pulling.

Move uncovered fingers and the elbow or shoulder as permitted. Look at the fingertips for their usual colour and warmth, and notice whether touch and movement remain normal. Attend follow-up even if pain settles, since clinical checks and imaging determine whether alignment has been maintained.

Get urgent help for fingers that turn pale or blue, feel cold or numb, become markedly swollen, or cannot move as before. Rapidly increasing pain, burning under the plaster, or a cast that becomes intolerably tight can indicate pressure on tissues, nerves or circulation.

Request prompt cast review when plaster cracks, softens, gets soaked, slips or develops rough edges. A bad smell, discharge, fever or worsening local soreness may point to a skin or wound problem. A further injury to the hand also warrants reassessment.

Ask which hand bone is fractured, whether the break involves a joint and how stable the alignment appears. Check when the next image or cast change is planned, what movements and work tasks are allowed, and when driving is safe. Before cast removal, discuss exercises, scar or swelling care if relevant, and whether hand therapy is advisable.
