What does a broken and dislocated wrist mean?

Short answer
A broken and dislocated wrist is an urgent injury requiring imaging, realignment and checks of hand circulation and nerves.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Immediate priority
- Support the wrist and assess circulation, nerves and skin
- Do not
- Attempt to straighten or realign the wrist yourself
- Follow-up checks
- Alignment, support fit, finger function and healing
Why this wrist injury is urgent
The injury combines a bone break with loss of normal joint alignment. Swelling or displaced structures can place pressure on nerves, blood vessels and skin, so the wrist should be supported and assessed without delay.
What assessment and treatment involve
Clinicians examine wrist shape, wounds, finger sensation, movement, pulse and skin blood flow before and after treatment. Images show which bones and joints are involved. The wrist may be realigned without an incision and held in a splint or cast after pain relief or anaesthesia.
Fracture fixation surgery may be recommended when the injury is unstable, alignment cannot be restored or maintained, the joint surface is disrupted, or bone has broken through the skin. Repeat images help confirm that the corrected position is being maintained.
What to do before and after treatment
Until assessed, keep the wrist still in the position found, remove rings if they slide off easily, support the arm, and avoid food or drink in case a procedure is needed. Do not try to push the joint back or straighten the wrist yourself.
After realignment, elevate the hand, move the uncovered fingers as directed, keep the splint or cast dry, and take medicines according to the discharge plan. Attend every follow-up because swelling can fall and an initially snug support may loosen. Rehabilitation later targets finger, wrist and forearm motion once stability permits.
Warning signs after the injury
Seek emergency care immediately if a finger becomes pale, blue or cold; numbness or weakness appears or worsens; the skin is stretched over a deformity; bone is visible; bleeding continues; or pain is severe and escalating. Cover an open wound loosely with a clean dressing without pressing bone back inside.
After splinting or casting, urgent reassessment is also needed for increasing tightness, burning pain, inability to move the fingers, or swelling that does not ease with elevation. Wet padding, foul odour, discharge or fever should be reported promptly.
Questions about recovery
Ask which bone and joint were injured, whether alignment is stable, and what findings would make surgery necessary. Confirm the permitted finger and forearm movements, planned imaging, cast care, lifting restrictions, and when hand therapy may begin.

Questions people ask
Is a dislocated wrist the same as a broken wrist?
No. A dislocation means joint surfaces have lost their normal alignment, while a fracture means bone has broken. Both can happen in the same injury.
Why should rings be removed early?
Hand swelling can trap a ring and place harmful pressure on a finger. Remove it only if it comes off easily; emergency clinicians can help if it is stuck.
Will a cast be enough?
A cast may hold an injury that stays well aligned after reduction. An unstable, open or poorly aligned injury may require fixation surgery instead.
