What should you know about brittle curly hair?

Short answer
Brittle curly hair often breaks when dryness, friction, heat, or chemical processing weakens the bends and ends of the hair fibre.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Breakage clues
- Short snapped hairs, uneven ends, tangles, and split tips
- Detangling tip
- Work in sections on wet, conditioned hair from ends upward
Why curls may snap
Curved strands can experience more friction and may not carry scalp oils evenly to the ends. This can leave the length dry, tangled, and less flexible. Detangling without enough slip, brushing a dry curl pattern, tight protective styles, bleaching, straightening, and repeated hot-tool use can add mechanical or chemical stress. Breakage appears as short hairs, uneven ends, split tips, and reduced length retention; it is different from shedding of a complete hair from the root.
A curl pattern can be naturally dry without being diseased. A new change in texture, patchy loss, scalp discomfort, scaling, or breakage close to the scalp deserves assessment because the scalp or new growth may be involved.
A gentler curl routine
Clean the scalp as needed without scrubbing the lengths, then condition generously. Detangle in sections with fingers or a wide-tooth comb while the hair is wet and coated with conditioner. Blot with a soft fabric instead of rubbing, let curls dry with minimal handling, and limit high heat and overlapping chemical services. Loosen styles that pull at the edges and vary where they are secured. A small trim can remove fragile ends. If diet or health concerns are present, discuss them with a clinician before choosing Hair Supplement Therapy.
When to seek care
Arrange a dermatology visit when breakage continues after routine changes, is concentrated in patches, or accompanies itching, pain, redness, sores, scaling, or visible thinning. Prompt advice is sensible for sudden marked shedding or hair changes with other new body symptoms. Bring photos, a list of curl products and treatments, and the timing of any illness or medicine change.
Questions for your doctor
Is this breakage from the shaft or loss from the follicle? Could my scalp be inflamed? Which ingredients or styling practices might be aggravating it? Do I need an evaluation for a general health contributor?

Questions people ask
Should curly hair be brushed dry?
Dry brushing can increase friction and disrupt curls; many people find sectioned, conditioned detangling gentler.
Can damaged curls be permanently repaired?
Products can improve feel and reduce friction, but snapped or split fibre must be protected and grown out.
