Bright yellow cloudy pee: what it can mean

Deep yellow urine commonly appears when you have not taken in enough fluid. Cloudiness can come from concentrated urine, harmless crystals, mucus, or substances in the urinary tract. Food dyes, vitamins, and supplements can alter colour without causing illness. A urinary tract infection may cause cloudy urine alongside burning, urgency, frequent small amounts, lower abdominal discomfort, or a strong smell. A kidney infection can add fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back. Cloudy urine alone cannot identify the cause.

Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and notice whether the urine becomes paler and clearer. Do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else’s medicine. Record associated symptoms, recent supplements, and when the change began. If cloudiness continues, recurs, or comes with urinary discomfort, arrange a medical assessment; a urine test can help distinguish infection from other causes.

Seek prompt medical care for fever, chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, visible blood, marked weakness, or difficulty passing urine. Urgent help is also appropriate if you feel suddenly very unwell or symptoms are worsening quickly. People who are pregnant, have kidney disease, use a urinary catheter, or have a weakened immune system should contact a clinician early when urinary changes come with discomfort or fever.
