What is the medical term for breathlessness?

Short answer
Breathlessness is the medical term dyspnoea for uncomfortable or difficult breathing, and its cause should be assessed when it is new, persistent, or severe.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the term describes
People may describe breathlessness as air hunger, chest tightness, fast breathing, or needing to work harder to breathe. It can happen at rest, during activity, when lying down, or alongside cough and wheezing. Causes range from temporary airway irritation to asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, anaemia, heart rhythm problems, angina, or a severe allergic reaction. The symptom itself does not identify one condition; timing, triggers, other symptoms, and medical history help guide assessment.
What you can do now
Stop and rest if breathing feels difficult. Sit upright, loosen tight clothing, and try slow breaths with a relaxed out-breath. If you have a prescribed reliever inhaler or written breathing plan, follow it as directed. Record when the feeling occurs, what you were doing, how long it lasts, and whether cough, fever, pain, swelling, or palpitations accompany it. Arrange a clinical review for unexplained or recurring symptoms; assessment may include listening to your chest, checking oxygen level, and testing breathing or blood counts.
When to seek urgent help
Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, inability to speak in full sentences, or sudden swelling of the face, tongue, or throat. Urgent assessment is also needed when breathlessness comes with chest pressure, heavy sweating, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or cannot breathe comfortably.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what pattern your symptoms suggest, whether you need breathing or blood tests, and which warning signs should prompt immediate care. Mention smoking or vaping, allergies, recent infections, medicines, and any change in exercise tolerance.
