Why breathing out makes me cough

Exhalation changes pressure inside the airways, which may trigger a cough when the lining is inflamed or secretions are moving. Asthma can present with cough, while acute bronchitis and a common cold may leave the airways sensitive after an infection. Allergic rhinitis can allow mucus to drain into the throat, and acid reflux can irritate the voice box or upper airway. Bronchiectasis may cause cough with recurring mucus.

Notice whether the cough follows exercise, cold air, meals, lying down, dust, or a recent illness. Drink fluids if swallowing is comfortable, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and use a humidified environment only if it feels helpful and safe. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or coughing blood. Arrange medical review for a cough that persists, repeatedly wakes you, causes vomiting, comes with fever or weight loss, or follows a clear pattern with exercise or meals. Children with breathing difficulty should be assessed promptly.
