Short answer

Do not breathe into a paper bag for shortness of breath; it can reduce oxygen intake and mask an emergency.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why this advice can be dangerous

Breathlessness has many possible causes, including asthma, COPD, bronchitis, anaemia, heart rhythm problems, and allergic emergencies. Rebreathing exhaled air may be harmful when the body is already struggling to receive oxygen or when carbon dioxide is building up. Feeling calmer after using a bag would not show that the underlying cause is harmless.

What to do instead

Move away from smoke or another obvious irritant, sit upright, loosen restrictive clothing, and take gentle breaths. Exhale slowly through pursed lips if that feels comfortable. Follow your prescribed asthma or COPD action plan, including rescue medicine instructions. Do not use a bag, mask, or improvised device to manage unexplained breathlessness.

When to seek care

Call emergency services for sudden or severe breathlessness, chest pressure, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, or difficulty speaking. Swelling of the face, mouth, or throat after a possible allergen is an emergency. Arrange clinical review for new, recurring, or gradually worsening breathlessness, even if it improves with rest.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which cause is most relevant to your pattern, whether you need lung or heart assessment, and which medicines or action plan are appropriate. Ask how to recognise your personal warning signs.
