How the structures involved in Diastasis Recti differ from normal

Short answer

Breaststroke may be possible with diastasis recti when you control pressure, technique and symptom response.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main guide
Use pressure control and symptoms, not gap width alone.
Technique cue
Exhale with effort and avoid an exaggerated head lift.
Progression
Increase one training element at a time.

Can you swim breaststroke with diastasis recti?

The visible width of the gap is not the only guide. Abdominal bulging, pain, pelvic heaviness, urine leakage and your ability to coordinate breathing provide useful information about whether the current effort is suitable.

Why technique matters

Diastasis recti is a widening and reduced tension along the connective tissue between the abdominal muscles. It can change how the trunk manages pressure but does not automatically rule out swimming.

Breaststroke combines a pull, a breath lift and a kick. Lifting the head and chest sharply or holding the breath may increase abdominal pressure and produce a ridge or dome along the midline.

Adapt your swim

Begin at an easy effort and exhale through the demanding part of the stroke. Keep the head lift small, allow the body to remain long in the water and pause if the abdomen pushes outward.

Shorten the swimming bout or alternate with gentle walking in the pool when form becomes difficult to maintain. Progress distance or effort gradually, changing one element at a time so you can identify what triggers symptoms.

A postnatal physiotherapist can assess abdominal tension, breathing, pelvic floor symptoms and whole-body movement, then suggest land exercises or stroke modifications matched to your function.

When to pause and get help

Stop the session if swimming causes abdominal or pelvic pain, increasing midline bulging, pelvic pressure, urine or bowel leakage, or a sense that the trunk cannot support the movement.

Arrange assessment for a painful or firm abdominal bulge, persistent back or pelvic symptoms, or difficulty progressing despite reducing effort. Sudden severe abdominal pain, vomiting or a bulge that cannot be gently relaxed requires urgent medical care because it may represent a hernia complication.

Questions for a physiotherapist

Ask how well you generate tension through the abdominal wall, whether breathing or pelvic floor coordination changes during effort, and which signs should guide progression.

Bring details of when doming or discomfort appears in the stroke so the assessment can focus on the exact movement rather than gap width alone.

Questions people ask

Does breaststroke make diastasis recti worse?

The effect depends on technique, effort and how your abdominal wall responds. Repeated doming, pain or pelvic floor symptoms are reasons to modify the stroke and seek assessment.

Should I avoid swimming until the gap closes?

A gap may remain even when abdominal function has improved. Readiness is better judged through tension, movement control and symptoms than by waiting for complete closure.

Can a physiotherapist assess my swimming technique?

A postnatal physiotherapist can assess the breathing, trunk and pelvic floor functions used in swimming and may suggest practical modifications for the pool.
