Breastfeeding during mastitis

Short answer
Breastfeeding can usually continue during mastitis, with gentle milk removal, comfort measures and timely medical assessment when symptoms are severe or worsening.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Breastfeeding
- Continuing is usually possible, guided by comfort and the baby's needs.
- Massage
- Avoid forceful deep pressure on inflamed breast tissue.
- Assessment
- Worsening illness, persistent swelling or spreading redness needs medical review.
The short answer
Milk from the affected breast is generally suitable for the baby, and abruptly stopping can worsen fullness. Feeding should remain comfortable enough to avoid extra tissue damage.
What mastitis does to the breast
Mastitis is breast inflammation that may cause a hot, swollen or reddened area, breast pain and flu-like illness. Inflammation can follow milk build-up and tissue pressure; bacterial infection may sometimes develop.
Pain or swelling may temporarily make feeding and milk flow more difficult. Forceful massage or repeatedly pumping beyond the baby's needs can aggravate inflammation rather than clear a supposed blockage.
Feeding and comfort measures
Feed responsively and allow the baby to take milk without trying to empty the breast on a schedule. If direct feeding is too painful, express only enough for comfort or to meet the baby's needs. Start on either side according to comfort.
Use a cool compress between feeds, rest, drink according to thirst and wear a supportive bra that does not press on the sore area. A clinician or pharmacist can advise on pain relief compatible with your health and breastfeeding. Gentle handling is preferable to deep pressure.
Check attachment and positioning if feeding hurts or milk transfer seems poor. A lactation professional can observe a feed and suggest adjustments without encouraging excessive pumping.
When medical assessment is needed
Contact a clinician promptly if you feel very unwell, have fever or chills, symptoms are worsening, or there is no clear improvement after rest and supportive care. Antibiotics may be needed when bacterial infection is suspected, and a clinician can choose one compatible with breastfeeding.
Seek urgent care for fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty or rapidly spreading redness. A persistent, very painful swelling or a soft fluid-like lump needs assessment for an abscess, which may require drainage as well as medicine.
Questions to ask at an appointment
Ask whether your symptoms suggest inflammation alone, infection or an abscess; whether medicine is needed; and how to manage feeding from each breast. Mention allergies, recent antibiotics, nipple damage and any recurrent episodes.

Questions people ask
Can mastitis harm my baby through breast milk?
Breast milk is generally suitable during mastitis. If you need medicine, tell the prescriber you are breastfeeding so they can select and explain an appropriate option.
Should I pump repeatedly to clear mastitis?
Extra pumping can stimulate more milk and worsen swelling. Express for comfort or the baby's needs unless a healthcare professional gives you a specific plan.
What if feeding from the sore breast is too painful?
Feed from the other breast and gently express the affected side as comfort allows. Seek feeding support for positioning and medical advice if pain is severe or persists.
