Screening aims to find breast changes before they can be felt. It is different from diagnostic imaging arranged to investigate a lump, nipple change, persistent focal pain, or another new concern.

A mammogram uses low-dose X-rays to create images of the breast. During the examination, each breast is placed on the machine and briefly compressed so the tissue can be shown clearly. Pressure may feel uncomfortable, but it lasts only while each image is taken.

The images are reviewed for changes that may need closer assessment. Being recalled does not by itself diagnose breast cancer; additional views, an examination, ultrasound, or a tissue sample may be needed to explain a finding. A normal screening result also cannot assess every future breast change.

Check the program's current eligibility and booking instructions before attending. On the day, wear a two-piece outfit because you will undress from the waist up, and avoid deodorant, powder, or lotion on the breasts and underarms because residue can affect the images.

Tell the radiographer about breast implants, limited shoulder movement, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, previous breast surgery, and any breast change you have noticed. Bring details of earlier mammograms if the service asks for them, since comparison can help the reader recognise whether a feature is new or unchanged.

Arrange a clinical assessment promptly if you notice a new breast or armpit lump, nipple discharge that is bloody or occurs without squeezing, a newly inverted nipple, skin dimpling, redness, swelling, or a persistent change in breast shape. Do not wait for a routine screening invitation or appointment to discuss these symptoms.

A clinician can examine the area and choose targeted tests such as diagnostic mammography or breast ultrasound. Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing redness or swelling with fever or marked illness, particularly during breastfeeding, because infection may need timely treatment.
