Breast itching during the second trimester

As the breasts change during pregnancy, the skin can feel tight, dry, or itchy. A new bra, detergent, fragrance, sweat, or heat may irritate the area. Redness, scaling, or a defined rash can occur with Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, or Psoriasis. Moist, warm folds under the breast can support a Skin Yeast Infection. Widespread itching without a visible rash deserves discussion with your maternity team because pregnancy-related conditions can sometimes cause it.

Use lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser only where needed, then pat dry. Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Choose a soft, supportive bra and change out of damp clothing. Avoid scratching, exfoliating products, and newly introduced creams. Do not start an oral or medicated treatment during pregnancy without checking its suitability with your clinician.

Contact your maternity or medical team promptly if itching is severe, widespread, worse at night, or present on the palms or soles, even when the skin looks normal. Arrange an assessment for a spreading rash, marked swelling, warmth, pain, nipple discharge, blisters, or cracked skin that is not settling. Urgent care is appropriate for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a rapidly developing reaction.

Ask whether the pattern fits simple dryness or a pregnancy-related cause, whether any tests are needed, and which moisturiser or anti-itch option is suitable for your trimester. Mention all products, medicines, supplements, and any itching elsewhere on the body.
