What should you know about breast freckles?

Freckles, also called ephelides, form when pigment-producing cells make more melanin in small areas of skin. Sun exposure can make them more visible, including on the upper chest or breast skin that is exposed by clothing. They are often light brown to darker brown, flat, and scattered rather than raised. A freckle is different from a mole, rash, or inflamed follicle, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Arrange a skin assessment if a spot becomes asymmetric, develops an uneven edge or several colours, grows, bleeds, crusts, or repeatedly itches. A clinician may inspect the mark closely and decide whether monitoring or further testing is appropriate.

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed breast and chest skin, reapply as directed, and cover the area with clothing when practical. Avoid tanning beds and deliberate tanning. Do not scrub, pick, or apply unprescribed lightening products to a pigmented mark, because irritation can obscure changes and cause discoloration.
