Breast cyst after a period: what to know

Breast cysts are fluid-filled sacs. Hormonal changes across the menstrual cycle can make a cyst feel fuller, tender or easier to notice before a period; it may become less prominent afterwards without disappearing completely. A smooth, mobile or tender lump can fit with a cyst, but feel alone cannot confirm what a lump is.

A clinician may examine both breasts and the nearby lymph-node areas. Imaging can help distinguish a fluid-filled cyst from a solid lump. Breast ultrasound is commonly used for this distinction and does not use ionising radiation.

Note where the lump is, whether it changes in size, and whether tenderness settles as the cycle progresses. Avoid repeatedly pressing it, because frequent checking can increase soreness and make changes harder to judge. Arrange a clinical breast assessment if this is a new lump, if it remains after the period, or if you are uncertain whether it has changed.

If imaging confirms a simple cyst and it is not troublesome, monitoring may be all that is needed. A painful or large cyst can sometimes be drained by a clinician; the appropriate plan depends on the examination and imaging findings.

Seek a prompt appointment for a lump that is new, growing, hard or fixed, or for skin dimpling, nipple inversion, spontaneous nipple discharge, a change in breast shape, or swelling in the armpit. These features need assessment, although they do not by themselves establish the cause.

Get urgent care if the breast becomes rapidly red, hot and swollen, especially with fever or feeling very unwell, as infection may require timely treatment.

Ask whether the examination suggests imaging, what features would confirm a simple cyst, and how you will receive the result. You can also ask what change should bring you back, whether drainage might help discomfort, and whether your age or personal breast history affects the assessment plan.
