What should you know about breast cancer symbol?

People and organisations may display it to show solidarity, remember someone affected, encourage screening conversations, or support breast cancer services. Its use does not reveal whether the wearer has cancer.

The familiar emblem is a pink looped ribbon. Different shades or designs may appear in awareness campaigns, but colour alone does not communicate a person's diagnosis, stage, treatment, or prognosis.

A ribbon can prompt useful discussion, yet medical decisions depend on symptoms, examination, imaging, and sometimes a tissue sample. It should never be interpreted as a substitute for those assessments.

If the symbol led you to think about your own breast health, notice what is normal for you and arrange a clinical review for a new or persistent change. Relevant changes include a lump or thickening, nipple discharge, nipple inversion, skin dimpling, redness, altered breast shape, or swelling in the armpit.

Bring the date you first noticed the change, whether it varies, and any previous breast imaging to the appointment. A clinician can decide whether examination, a mammogram, ultrasound, MRI, or biopsy is appropriate.

Book a prompt medical assessment for any unexplained breast or nipple change that persists, worsens, or feels unusual for you. Breast cancer can present with a lump or other changes, while many breast changes have non-cancerous causes; examination identifies the appropriate next step.

Seek urgent care for a breast that rapidly becomes very red, hot, swollen, and painful, especially with fever or feeling acutely unwell, because infection may need timely treatment.

You might ask: What could explain this change? Which examination or imaging test fits my situation? If imaging finds an abnormal area, would I need a biopsy? How and when will I receive the result? Also ask what new change should bring you back sooner.
