What should you know about breast cancer spread to lungs and liver?

These distant deposits are called metastases. Their cells originated in the breast, so they are treated as metastatic breast cancer rather than as a new primary lung or liver cancer.

Lung metastases may present with persistent breathlessness, cough, chest discomfort, or fluid around a lung, though deposits can also be found on imaging before causing symptoms. Liver metastases may present with reduced appetite, nausea, discomfort beneath the right ribs, abdominal swelling, itching, jaundice, or unusual tiredness.

Symptoms cannot show by themselves whether breast cancer has spread. Imaging, blood tests, and sometimes a biopsy help define the location and extent of disease. Tissue sampling may also confirm receptor or molecular features when that information could change treatment.

Treatment commonly works throughout the body and may include endocrine therapy, targeted medicines, chemotherapy, immunotherapy in selected settings, or combinations. The choice reflects hormone receptor and HER2 results, molecular findings, organ function, prior therapy, symptoms, and personal preferences.

Local procedures or radiotherapy may be considered for particular problems, while supportive care can address breathlessness, fluid collections, pain, nausea, appetite, itching, and fatigue. Keeping a record of symptoms, medicines, and changes in daily activity gives the oncology team concrete information for adjusting care.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or sudden breathing difficulty, chest pain, coughing up blood, blue or grey lips, fainting, or new confusion. These symptoms can reflect serious lung, heart, infection, or clotting problems and need immediate assessment.

Contact the oncology team promptly for new jaundice, rapidly increasing abdominal swelling, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, unusual bleeding, marked drowsiness, fever during treatment, or a swift decline in strength. Follow any emergency instructions supplied with your cancer medicines.

Ask how the lung and liver findings were confirmed, whether another biopsy would affect the plan, what the treatment is intended to achieve, and how response will be monitored. Clarify which side effects require urgent contact, how symptoms can be relieved, and whether early supportive or palliative care would add practical help alongside cancer treatment.
