What should you know about breast cancer rash?

A rash alone cannot confirm or exclude cancer. Its location, speed of change, associated breast findings, medicines, allergies, infection signs, and response to treatment all help guide the next step.

Inflammatory breast cancer may present with rapidly developing redness, warmth, swelling, heaviness, thickened skin, or dimpling that resembles orange peel. Paget disease of the nipple may present with persistent scaling, crusting, irritation, or discharge centred on one nipple.

Other possibilities include dermatitis, friction, an allergic reaction, fungal irritation, mastitis, or an abscess. Pain, fever, a tender hot area, or feeling unwell can point toward infection, while a new lump, nipple pulling inward, or swelling under the arm warrants breast assessment.

Note when the change began and whether it is spreading. Photographing the area in consistent light can help show progression. Avoid repeatedly trying new creams, because they may irritate the skin or obscure its appearance.

Arrange a clinical breast examination if the change persists, affects one breast or nipple, progresses, or occurs with a lump or nipple change. Depending on the findings, assessment may include imaging and a sample of skin or breast tissue rather than treatment based on appearance alone.

Seek prompt medical care for redness or swelling that spreads quickly, marked breast warmth, fever, pus, severe pain, or feeling faint or very unwell. These features can accompany an infection that needs timely treatment.

Book an early breast review for unexplained one-sided skin thickening, orange-peel dimpling, a newly inverted nipple, bloody nipple discharge, an underarm swelling, or nipple scaling that does not settle. Urgency comes from the nature and progression of these changes, not from assuming their cause.

Ask which features suggest infection, inflammation, or another skin condition; whether breast imaging is appropriate; whether tissue sampling is needed; and what change should trigger a faster reassessment. If treatment for a suspected benign cause is offered, clarify when improvement should be expected and what follow-up is planned.
