PET-CT scans in breast cancer care

It is not automatically needed for every breast cancer diagnosis. The oncology team selects it when the result could clarify suspected spread, help assess a change, or influence a treatment decision. Mammography, ultrasound, MRI, biopsy, and other scans answer different questions.

The PET component detects the distribution of a small amount of radioactive tracer, while CT shows anatomical detail. Cancer can have increased uptake, but inflammation, infection, healing tissue, and normal organs may also take up tracer. A bright area therefore needs interpretation in context.

Some breast cancer deposits may be too small or not sufficiently tracer-avid to stand out. The report is read alongside pathology, tumour receptor information, symptoms, previous images, and current treatment. PET-CT cannot replace a biopsy when tissue confirmation is necessary.

Follow the imaging centre’s instructions about food, drinks, medicines, and physical activity because preparation affects image quality. Tell staff if you have diabetes, are pregnant or may be pregnant, are breastfeeding, have difficulty lying flat, or feel anxious in scanners.

After the tracer injection, you will rest quietly before imaging and then remain still on the scanning table. The appointment takes longer than the scan itself because uptake time and preparation are included. Ask the centre when and through whom you will receive the report.

Contact the imaging centre before arrival if you cannot follow the preparation instructions, your blood glucose is outside the range they specified, or your pregnancy or breastfeeding status has changed. Staff can decide whether the booking or preparation needs adjustment.

After the scan, seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or rapidly developing widespread hives. Such symptoms require immediate care regardless of their cause. For milder concerns at the injection site, call the imaging service for advice.

Ask what clinical question the PET-CT is intended to answer and how the finding could change your plan. When reviewing the report, clarify whether an area is definite or uncertain, whether comparison imaging is available, and whether another scan or biopsy is needed.
