Choosing apparel during and after breast cancer treatment

Useful options may include loose front-opening tops, soft bras without rigid seams, drain-friendly garments and clothing that is easy to put on with limited shoulder movement. The surgical team should guide the use and fit of compression garments and post-surgery bras.

After breast or underarm surgery, reaching overhead and pulling fabric across the chest can be uncomfortable. Front fastenings and wide openings reduce the movement needed to dress. Internal pockets can hold a temporary soft form or breast prosthesis, while drain pockets help keep tubing supported and visible for checks.

Radiotherapy can make treated skin tender, dry or easily irritated. Smooth, breathable fabric and a relaxed fit may reduce rubbing. If arm or chest swelling develops, ordinary tight sleeves or bands can leave deep marks; a lymphoedema garment requires individual measurement rather than choosing a smaller everyday size.

Before surgery, ask what clothing will work with the planned incision, dressings and drains. Test fasteners using the hand on the untreated side, check that seams do not cross a tender area, and choose layers that can adapt to temperature changes. Keep drain bulbs below the insertion site if that is how your team instructed you.

Wait for clearance before wearing an underwired bra over a healing incision. A prosthesis fitter can help balance weight and shape once the wound is ready. Wash garments according to their care label, and keep anything touching an open or draining wound clean as directed by the clinical team.

Remove or loosen a garment and contact your team if it causes increasing pain, numbness, colour change, cool fingers, deep pressure marks or worsening swelling. New arm or chest heaviness, tightness or swelling deserves assessment because it may need lymphoedema care rather than a different clothing size.

Seek prompt advice for spreading redness, heat, pus, an opening wound, fever, a drain that suddenly stops or loses suction, or fluid leaking around the tube. Clothing should never conceal a wound problem that needs examination.

Ask whether a post-surgery bra or compression garment is recommended, when it should be worn, and what fit signals mean it is too tight. Confirm where drains and dressings will sit, when a breast form can be used, and whether a certified fitter or lymphoedema therapist should measure you.
