Breakthrough bleeding while taking Yaz

The pack sequence, missed active tablets, stomach illness, interacting medicines, and other symptoms are more useful than bleeding alone when deciding what action is needed.

Yaz contains oestrogen and a progestogen. These hormones limit growth of the uterine lining, and small areas can shed at an unexpected time. Spotting may be more noticeable while the body adjusts, after active tablets are taken late, or when the pack schedule changes.

Not every episode comes from the contraceptive. Chlamydia can present with bleeding between periods or following sex, often alongside no obvious symptoms. Endometrial polyps can present with irregular or heavier bleeding. A clinician may consider these and other causes when bleeding is persistent, returns after a stable pattern, or has accompanying symptoms.

Keep taking the tablets in pack order unless you receive different medical advice. If an active tablet was missed or taken late, use the Yaz leaflet for the correct response; instructions depend on which tablet was affected. Check with a pharmacist if vomiting, diarrhoea, or a newly started medicine may alter protection.

Write down when spotting starts, whether it occurs after sex, and whether there is pain, discharge, or a missed dose. Consider a pregnancy test if tablets were missed or pregnancy is otherwise possible. A planned review is appropriate when bleeding continues to disrupt daily activities or repeatedly appears after previously predictable cycles.

Seek urgent assessment for profuse bleeding with dizziness or fainting, severe abdominal or pelvic pain, or bleeding with a positive pregnancy test. Sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing blood, or a painful swollen leg also requires emergency care because combined hormonal pills carry a risk of blood clots.

Arrange timely testing for bleeding accompanied by pelvic pain, fever, unusual discharge, pain during sex, or possible exposure to a sexually transmitted infection.

Ask whether the bleeding fits your stage of Yaz use, whether any current medicines affect it, and whether pregnancy testing, infection screening, examination, or ultrasound is appropriate. Mention migraine symptoms, smoking, clot history, and any new medical diagnosis when discussing whether Yaz remains suitable.
