What should you know about braxton hiccups?

Short answer
Hiccup treatment usually starts with removing triggers and using gentle measures, while persistent or troublesome episodes need assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Mechanism
- Hiccups are repeated diaphragm spasms.
- Common triggers
- Fast eating, fizzy drinks, large meals, and sudden temperature changes.
- Review needed
- Persistent or disruptive episodes need assessment.
Why hiccups happen
A hiccup is an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm followed by a brief closure at the top of the airway. Eating quickly, a large meal, fizzy drinks, alcohol, sudden temperature changes, laughing, or emotional excitement can stimulate this reflex. Acid reflux and gastritis may irritate nearby nerves and contribute to repeated hiccups.
Short episodes are usually self-limited. Hiccups that continue, repeatedly disturb sleep, prevent eating or drinking, or occur with other symptoms deserve a clinical review because medicines, nerve irritation, or another illness may be involved.
Measures you can try
Slow your breathing, take small sips of cool water, and eat slowly once the episode settles. Avoid fizzy drinks, alcohol, very large meals, and rapid swallowing for a while. Do not use frightening tricks, choking hazards, or forceful breath-holding. If reflux seems connected, note meal timing and lying-down symptoms; a clinician or pharmacist can advise whether acid reflux medication is appropriate.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for hiccups with severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, new confusion, weakness, or repeated vomiting. Arrange a medical review when hiccups persist, recur frequently, cause poor sleep, or make eating and drinking difficult. Tell the clinician about new medicines, abdominal symptoms, reflux, and neurological symptoms.
Questions for your doctor
Could reflux or gastritis be contributing? Might any medicine be triggering the episodes? What treatment is suitable if hiccups disturb sleep or eating? Which accompanying symptoms should prompt urgent help?

Questions people ask
Can reflux cause hiccups?
Yes. Reflux can irritate the upper digestive tract and contribute to repeated hiccups.
