IPL uses a broad range of light rather than one laser wavelength. The light is absorbed by pigment in hair and converted into heat near the follicle, which can slow future growth. It works best when there is enough contrast between hair and surrounding skin; very light, grey or red hair may respond poorly. A home unit is designed with lower energy and built-in safety features than many clinic systems, but it can still irritate or burn skin when misused.

IPL hair reduction is not the same purpose as an IPL Photofacial, which is a clinician-directed use of light for selected visible skin concerns.

Follow the manual’s skin-tone check, patch-test guidance and treatment schedule. Shave as directed, keep skin clean and dry, and use the device only on approved body areas. Do not flash over tattoos, dark moles, open skin, active rash or recently tanned skin. Avoid repeated flashes on one patch and protect treated areas from intense sun. Stop if the sensation becomes sharply painful rather than merely warm.

Seek medical advice if redness persists or worsens, or if you develop blisters, burns, significant swelling, drainage, severe pain or a lasting light or dark patch. Eye discomfort after treating near the face warrants prompt advice; do not use the device close to the eyes.
