What should you know about BRAF inhibitors for melanoma?

BRAF is a gene involved in signals that can drive melanoma cells to grow. A tumour sample may be tested to see whether a relevant BRAF change is present. When it is, a BRAF inhibitor may be used alone or with another targeted medicine, depending on the disease setting and the oncology plan. This is different from immunotherapy, which helps the immune system recognise and attack cancer. Surgery, staging tests, and medicines may each have a role.

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed and do not change the schedule without contacting your oncology team. Keep a record of fever, rash, bowel changes, joint symptoms, vision changes, and new skin lesions. Protect your skin from strong sunlight and attend planned blood tests, examinations, and scans. Contact your treatment team promptly for a high fever, severe chills, a rapidly spreading rash, blistering or peeling skin, marked weakness, chest symptoms, fainting, severe diarrhoea, or new confusion. New neurological symptoms such as a seizure, weakness, or a severe headache need urgent assessment. Do not wait for the next routine appointment when symptoms are sudden or worsening.
