BPPV and driving: what should you know?

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is an inner-ear condition in which particular head movements provoke a short episode of vertigo. Looking over a shoulder, checking mirrors, bending, or getting in and out of a vehicle may bring symptoms on. The condition itself does not automatically determine whether you can drive; your current symptoms and ability to control the vehicle do.

Do not drive during an active spinning episode or while you feel unsteady afterward. Arrange a GP consultation for assessment, especially if the episodes are new or recurring. A clinician may recommend the Epley manoeuvre when the examination supports BPPV. Ask about returning to driving only when head movements no longer impair safe observation and control.

Get urgent medical help for vertigo with new weakness, trouble speaking, severe headache, fainting, chest pain, persistent vomiting, or difficulty walking that does not settle. These features need assessment because they are not typical of simple positional episodes. Do not drive yourself if urgent symptoms are present.

Ask which movements trigger your symptoms, whether treatment is appropriate, and what signs mean you should stop driving again. Discuss any work or travel that requires rapid head turns or balance.
