The machine produces a tracing from sensors placed on the skin. It supports an electrocardiogram, commonly called an ECG, but the device itself does not decide what a tracing means or replace a clinical assessment.

Each heartbeat creates electrical signals that spread through the heart muscle. An ECG captures these signals as lines on a screen or printed report. A clinician may review the heart rate, rhythm, timing of the signals, and patterns that can suggest strain, reduced blood flow, or a disturbance in the heartbeat.

An ECG result is one part of the picture. A normal-looking tracing does not explain every type of chest discomfort, breathlessness, or dizziness, and an unusual tracing needs interpretation alongside your symptoms, examination, and medical history.

You may be asked to uncover part of your chest and lie still while adhesive sensors are placed on your chest and limbs. Tell the healthcare professional if you have sensitive skin, a wound where a sensor may go, or difficulty lying flat.

Keep your body relaxed and avoid talking while the tracing is recorded. The test does not send electricity into your body. After the sensors are removed, the clinician reviews the recording and explains whether you need another test or follow-up.

Seek emergency help immediately for chest pressure or pain that is severe, persistent, or spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw; marked difficulty breathing; fainting; or sudden cold sweating with nausea. Do not delay urgent assessment while trying to arrange an ECG or interpret a home reading.

Arrange prompt medical advice for new palpitations, repeated dizziness, or episodes of near-fainting, especially if they occur with chest discomfort or breathlessness. Bring any ECG report to the appointment, but do not treat a machine printout as a diagnosis.

Ask what the tracing shows, whether your symptoms could have occurred outside the recording, and whether you need monitoring over a longer period. You can also ask what preparation is needed for any follow-up test and which symptoms should prompt immediate help.
