Bow legs and flat feet together

Short answer
Bow legs and flat feet can occur together, yet each alignment feature should be assessed separately for flexibility, symptoms and walking impact.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Flat feet
- The inner arches lower during standing.
- Key distinction
- Flexible and rigid flat feet are assessed differently.
- Treatment goal
- Improve comfort and function according to the cause.
What to know first
The combination does not automatically indicate damage. Comfortable, flexible feet may need only observation, whereas pain, stiffness, uneven wear or declining activity calls for a closer examination.
How the legs and feet interact
With bow legs, the knees remain farther apart when the ankles meet. With flat feet, the inner arches lower while standing. Foot position can change how force travels up the leg, but visible flattening does not by itself explain knee symptoms.
Assessment includes whether an arch appears when sitting or rising onto the toes, whether one side differs, and how the knees track during walking or a controlled squat. The clinician also checks ankle motion, footwear wear, tender areas and muscle control.
Supporting comfortable movement
Choose shoes that fit the heel and forefoot without squeezing the toes. Keep active within comfort and note which activities bring on arch, heel or kneecap pain. Exercise Therapy may focus on calf flexibility, foot control, hip strength and gradual activity tolerance when examination findings support those goals.
Custom Orthotics can alter pressure and improve comfort for selected people, but they are not required for every flat arch and do not directly straighten bowed bones. A Physiotherapy assessment can match exercises or supports to the actual movement problem.
Symptoms that merit assessment
Arrange an appointment for persistent Foot Pain, Arch Pain, limping, repeated ankle giving-way, a rigid arch, worsening asymmetry or reduced ability to walk and play. Pain around the kneecap may have several contributors and should be examined rather than assigned to foot shape alone.
Get urgent help after significant trauma if weight-bearing is impossible, or for a hot swollen joint, fever, sudden numbness, new weakness, or a foot that is cold or discoloured.
Useful questions to bring
Ask whether the feet are flexible or rigid, what is driving the pain, and whether the leg alignment is symmetrical. Request a clear goal for any exercise, insole or follow-up plan, including how improvement will be judged in daily movement.

Questions people ask
Do flat feet cause bow legs?
Foot posture and leg alignment can influence movement together, but seeing both does not establish that one caused the other.
Will insoles straighten bow legs?
Insoles may change pressure or improve symptoms in selected feet, but they do not directly reshape bowed leg bones.
Can exercise rebuild an arch?
Exercise may improve strength, control and comfort; the visible arch shape may or may not change.
