Bovine mastitis treatment and safe human care

A healthcare professional assesses whether a person's breast symptoms reflect inflammation, bacterial infection, a pocket of pus, or another problem. Treatment depends on those findings, the person's allergies and medicines, whether they are breastfeeding, and how unwell they feel. Not every inflamed breast requires an antibiotic.

When bacterial mastitis is suspected, a clinician can prescribe a human antibiotic and explain how to take it. A suspected abscess may need imaging and drainage rather than repeated courses of medicine alone. Persistent or unusual symptoms may require further breast evaluation.

During breastfeeding, continue feeding responsively if it is tolerable. Express only what is needed for comfort when direct feeding is difficult; trying to empty the breast repeatedly can increase milk production and inflammation. Handle swollen tissue gently, avoid deep massage, and use a cool compress for comfort.

Take only pain relief or antibiotics recommended for you, and tell the prescriber about allergies, long-term conditions, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and other medicines. Complete any prescribed course according to its label. Do not share antibiotics or use livestock products, even when the product name sounds familiar.

Request timely medical care if pain, heat, redness, or swelling is worsening; fever or chills are present; discharge contains pus or blood; or a tender lump develops. Emergency care is warranted for fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, profound weakness, or inability to drink. If prescribed treatment is not bringing the expected change, contact the prescriber for reassessment rather than using leftover medicine.

Ask what diagnosis the treatment targets, whether there are signs of an abscess, how the medicine fits with breastfeeding, and which adverse effects need attention. Also clarify how feeding or expressing should be adjusted, when follow-up is due, and what the next step will be if symptoms persist.
