What should you know about botulism food poisoning?

Botulism happens when a nerve toxin interferes with signals from nerves to muscles. Foodborne illness may begin with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or diarrhoea, followed by blurred or double vision, drooping eyelids, dry mouth, trouble speaking or swallowing, and weakness. The weakness can spread downward and affect breathing.

This pattern is different from ordinary food poisoning, but symptoms do not always appear together. A person can remain awake while muscle weakness progresses, so a change in breathing, swallowing, speech, or vision deserves urgent attention.

Go to an emergency department or contact emergency services immediately if botulism is suspected. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe and do not try to treat progressive weakness at home. Tell clinicians what was eaten, when it was eaten, and whether anyone else shared the food or became ill.

Hospital care may include monitoring, an antitoxin when appropriate, and support for breathing or swallowing. Fluids may be given through a vein or by an oral rehydration plan when safe.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, choking, inability to swallow, new weakness, double vision, drooping eyelids, or slurred speech after possible food exposure. Do not drive yourself if vision, weakness, or breathing is affected.
