Short answer

A skin graft in bottom surgery transfers healthy skin from a donor site to cover or line a surgical area when the planned reconstruction needs it.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Two healing sites
Care is needed at both the donor site and the recipient site.
Plan varies
The procedure and aftercare depend on the reconstruction and your individual anatomy.

How a graft works

The surgeon removes a thin layer of skin from a selected donor area and places it on a prepared recipient site. The graft does not bring its own blood supply; it must connect with the recipient bed while healing. The donor site also needs dressings and care. The exact role of a graft varies with the operation, the available tissue, previous surgery, and the surgeon’s reconstruction plan.

A consultation should cover scars, sensation, wound care, activity restrictions, dilation or other aftercare where relevant, and what happens if the graft heals slowly or needs additional treatment. Fractional Laser Treatment may be discussed later for selected scar concerns, but it does not replace surgical assessment.

Preparing and recovering

Before surgery, give the team a complete medication and nicotine history and ask which medicines or supplements to pause. Afterward, keep both donor and graft sites protected exactly as instructed. Do not pull off dressings, soak wounds, apply unapproved creams, or resume strenuous activity before clearance. Attend every wound check so the team can assess colour, attachment, drainage, and healing.

Warning signs after surgery

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing pain, bleeding that does not settle with instructed pressure, foul-smelling drainage, fever, spreading redness, marked swelling, wound separation, or a graft that becomes unusually pale, dark, cool, or detached. Urgent assessment is needed for heavy bleeding, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Questions for your surgical team

Ask where the donor site will be, how scars and sensation may change, how dressings are managed, which activities are restricted, how complications are handled, and whether Skin Graft is the planned technique for your specific reconstruction.

Questions people ask

Does every bottom surgery use a skin graft?

No. The need for a graft depends on the surgical technique, available tissue, prior procedures, and the reconstruction plan.

What is the donor site?

It is the area from which healthy skin is taken; it heals separately and may leave a scar or temporary change in sensation.
