Botox for Muscle Spasms: What to Know

A spasm is an involuntary muscle contraction. Botulinum toxin type A can reduce signalling to a targeted muscle, which may ease abnormal tightening and improve movement or comfort. It does not treat the underlying cause of every spasm, and benefit depends on accurate diagnosis and placement. A clinician may combine injections with physiotherapy, medicines, or other care.

Keep a record of when spasms occur, which muscles are involved, triggers, pain, weakness, and any effect on walking, work, or sleep. Bring your medication list and mention swallowing or breathing symptoms, neuromuscular disease, infection near the planned site, pregnancy, and previous toxin injections. Follow the rehabilitation and review plan so muscle strength and function can be assessed.

Contact your clinician for increasing weakness, falls, loss of function, severe pain, or difficulty swallowing after treatment. Seek emergency care for trouble breathing, choking, sudden widespread weakness, or new neurological symptoms. A rapidly developing spasm with facial drooping or speech difficulty also needs urgent assessment.

Ask what is causing the spasm, which muscle will be treated, how function will be monitored, what rehabilitation is needed, and which symptoms require immediate help.
