What should you know about borderline pre eclampsia?

A clinician may use the phrase when blood pressure, urine protein, blood tests or symptoms are concerning but do not yet form a clear diagnosis. These findings can change, so the maternity team may repeat measurements and review how you and the baby are doing.

Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy condition involving raised blood pressure and signs that organs or the placenta may be affected. A single slightly raised reading does not establish it: blood pressure technique, repeat readings, urine results, blood tests, symptoms and gestational stage all shape the assessment.

The phrase should not be taken as reassurance that follow-up is optional. Your maternity team may arrange additional appointments, fetal growth checks or monitoring, depending on the complete clinical picture.

Keep every requested review and follow the monitoring plan given by your maternity team. If home blood-pressure checks are recommended, use the advised cuff and technique, record each result, and know which reading should prompt a call. Do not start, stop or alter blood-pressure medicine without clinical advice.

Bring a list of symptoms and medicines to appointments. The plan may range from continued antenatal observation to hospital assessment; if concerns increase later in pregnancy, clinicians may discuss timing and method of birth.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for a severe or persistent headache, new visual disturbance, strong pain beneath the ribs, sudden marked swelling of the face or hands, vomiting with feeling very unwell, breathlessness, vaginal bleeding, or reduced fetal movement. Seek emergency help for collapse, a seizure, severe breathing difficulty or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Do not wait for the next routine appointment when a warning symptom appears, even if previous results were described as borderline.

Ask which finding led to the term borderline, when blood pressure and laboratory tests will be repeated, what symptoms require a direct call, and whether fetal growth monitoring is planned. You can also ask how the results might change the recommended place, timing or method of birth.
