What should you know about boots cradle cap?

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, often appears as greasy or dry yellow, white, or brown scale on the scalp. It may extend to the eyebrows, behind the ears, or skin folds. Babies are usually otherwise well, and the scale is not caused by poor hygiene or by something a parent has done.

The appearance can overlap with eczema, irritation, or infection. A rash that is very red, moist, painful, rapidly spreading, or associated with illness needs a closer look.

Wash the scalp with a mild baby shampoo, then use a soft brush or cloth only to lift scale that loosens easily. If scale is firmly attached, a clinician may suggest an appropriate emollient to soften it before washing. Keep products away from the eyes and never pick, scrape, or pull flakes from the scalp.

Stop any product that causes irritation. Do not use medicated creams, essential oils, or antifungal products on an infant unless a healthcare professional recommends the specific treatment and instructions. Wash hands before and after scalp care.

Arrange a review if the scalp is bleeding, oozing, crusted, swollen, very itchy, or not settling with gentle care. Seek prompt help if your baby seems unwell, has a fever, or the rash spreads quickly. A clinician can distinguish cradle cap from eczema or infection and advise whether an emollient or topical antifungal treatment is suitable.
