Bone scan in lung cancer

It maps areas of active bone response after a tracer injection. Some people instead have PET-CT or another imaging test, depending on the type of lung cancer, existing scans and the exact staging question.

Areas of increased tracer uptake can reflect cancer in bone, but they can also come from arthritis, a healing fracture, infection or other non-cancerous bone activity. The distribution and appearance help the radiologist decide whether a finding needs closer examination.

The result forms one part of lung cancer staging. The team reviews it with chest and body imaging, the pathology diagnosis and your symptoms. If a spot is uncertain, targeted CT, MRI, PET imaging or occasionally a biopsy may clarify it.

Give the department a current medicine list and mention recent injuries, operations or infections that could affect interpretation. Tell staff if you could be pregnant or are breastfeeding. You may be encouraged to drink water after the injection and use the toilet before imaging.

The camera records images while you keep still, and the procedure itself does not treat the bone. Ask when results will be available, which clinician will discuss them and whether the scan replaces or complements staging already completed.

New severe back pain with leg weakness, altered sensation around the groin, difficulty walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control requires emergency assessment because spinal cord or nerve compression must be excluded.

Seek timely care for persistent focal bone pain, pain that prevents weight-bearing or sudden pain after minimal strain. New confusion, seizures, one-sided weakness, coughing up more than small streaks of blood, or severe breathlessness also needs urgent evaluation independent of the scan schedule.

Ask why this type of bone imaging was selected, whether any finding needs confirmation and how the result changes the stage or treatment plan. If a painful site is involved, discuss pain relief, protection from fracture and whether local treatment could help.
