Bone Cement Implantation: Procedure and Safety

As the cement sets, the team monitors the patient and prevents material from entering unwanted spaces. Possible complications vary by procedure and may include infection, cement leakage, injury to nearby structures, implant loosening or changes in blood pressure and breathing around implantation.

Tell the anaesthesia and surgical teams about heart or lung conditions, allergies, current medicines, previous blood clots and earlier reactions during surgery. Use the team’s medicine and fasting instructions. The planned operation determines whether you need blood tests, imaging, walking aids or home support.

Recovery instructions should identify wound care, permitted weight-bearing, exercises and clot-prevention measures where relevant. Take only the medicines recommended for you. Keep the implant information supplied by the hospital and bring it to future consultations involving the operated area.

Get emergency help for sudden chest pain, breathing difficulty, collapse, new one-sided weakness or a painful swollen leg with breathlessness. Contact the surgical service promptly if the wound opens, drains fluid, becomes increasingly red or hot, or if fever accompanies worsening pain. New numbness, weakness or bladder or bowel difficulty after a spinal procedure also needs urgent assessment.

Ask why a cemented approach fits your anatomy and bone quality, whether a non-cemented option exists, and what specific risks apply to the planned operation. Confirm the anaesthetic plan, mobility milestones, rehabilitation arrangements and how the team will check implant position or function later.
