Bone Cement Cranioplasty: What Patients Should Know

A neurosurgical team shapes the material over or within the missing area after exposing healthy skull margins. Whether it suits a particular defect depends on its size, location, surrounding skin, previous infection, earlier operations and the surgeon’s chosen reconstruction method.

The term bone cement can describe synthetic materials prepared during surgery and allowed to harden into a stable implant. In cranioplasty, it fills or covers a skull gap; it does not regrow the missing bone. The surgeon aims for a secure fit that protects the brain and produces a smooth head contour.

The operation is performed under anaesthesia. The team may use scans or a pre-planned implant shape to guide reconstruction. Risks can include infection, bleeding, wound problems, fluid collection, implant movement or an unsatisfactory contour, and personal risk depends on the clinical circumstances.

Before surgery, give the team a complete medication list and describe allergies, previous implant reactions, past cranial infections and any wound-healing difficulties. Follow the hospital’s instructions on medicines, eating, drinking and hair or skin preparation rather than making changes yourself.

After discharge, keep the incision clean as directed, avoid pressure or impact to the operated area and attend scheduled wound checks. Take prescribed medicines correctly. Resume washing, work, driving, exercise and head protection only according to the neurosurgical team’s plan.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, discharge, wound opening, fever, worsening headache or a new change in the implant contour. Seek emergency care for a seizure, fainting, confusion, new weakness, trouble speaking, repeated vomiting or clear fluid leaking from the wound.

Ask which cement material is planned, why it is preferred over a metal or custom implant, how it will be fixed, and how earlier surgery affects the approach. Clarify expected scar location, activity limits, scan compatibility, follow-up arrangements and whom to contact if the wound changes.
