What should you know about bone and soft tissue sarcoma?

Soft tissue sarcoma can begin in structures such as muscle, fat, fibrous tissue, nerves or blood vessels. Sarcoma in bone is distinct from cancer that has spread to bone from another organ.

Sarcomas differ in how their cells look, how quickly they grow and which treatments they respond to. The site determines which muscles, joints, nerves or organs may be affected and what an operation would need to protect. MRI or other imaging defines the local tumour, scans check for spread and biopsy tissue provides the subtype and grade used in planning.

Avoid having an unexplained mass removed before appropriate imaging and specialist review if sarcoma is suspected. A sarcoma team can plan the biopsy route and definitive surgery together. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include surgery with attention to function and clear margins, radiotherapy near the tumour site, chemotherapy for selected subtypes, and rehabilitation to support movement and daily activities.

A growing or deep lump, persistent focal bone pain or swelling deserves medical assessment, particularly when it limits movement or sleep. Get urgent help for sudden intense pain, a suspected broken bone, rapidly worsening limb weakness or loss of sensation. A tumour causing new breathing or swallowing difficulty requires immediate evaluation. If treatment suppresses immunity, follow the oncology team's urgent instructions for fever or feeling acutely unwell.
