Body rashes in dengue: what to know

The rash may look like flat or slightly raised red areas and can affect the trunk, arms, legs, or other parts of the skin. Some areas of normal-looking skin may remain between the red patches. Dengue can also cause fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, or chills, but a rash alone cannot confirm the infection.

A rash can be part of the body's response to dengue, but many other infections, medicines, and skin conditions can cause a similar appearance. A clinician considers when the rash began, how it changed, recent travel or mosquito exposure, temperature readings, and associated symptoms. Easy bruising, bleeding from the nose or gums, or tiny red or purple spots should be mentioned promptly because they may indicate a need for closer assessment.

The rash may itch in some people. Try not to scratch, as broken skin can become irritated. Do not rely on the rash's appearance to judge whether the illness is improving.

Arrange a GP consultation if dengue is possible, especially after travel or mosquito exposure in an area where dengue occurs. Record the start of fever and rash, take a clear photograph if the appearance changes, and list medicines or supplements you have taken. Drink fluids regularly if you can, rest, and use light clothing. Ask a clinician or pharmacist which fever medicine is suitable; avoid taking aspirin or ibuprofen unless a healthcare professional specifically advises it, because bleeding can be a concern.

Seek urgent medical help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, unusual sleepiness or agitation, difficulty breathing, fainting, cold or clammy skin, blood in vomit or stool, or bleeding that does not stop. Get prompt advice if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, or the rash is rapidly worsening with swelling of the lips or difficulty breathing. Symptoms can become more concerning as a fever settles, so do not use a lower temperature alone as reassurance.
