Short answer

Body odour develops when sweat and skin oils are changed by bacteria, with heat, hormones, clothing and skin problems influencing the result.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Common reasons

Underarm and groin glands become more active during puberty, and heat, exercise or emotional stress can increase moisture. Bacteria then break down sweat and oils, creating a noticeable smell. Tight or synthetic clothing can hold sweat against the skin, while shoes and sportswear may retain odour. Diet, medicines and fragranced products can alter scent. A rash, bacterial overgrowth or another skin condition is also possible when odour comes with visible changes.

What may help

Wash the underarms, groin and feet gently, then dry carefully. Change sweaty clothes and socks promptly, wash sportswear regularly and choose breathable fabrics. Use deodorant for odour control or antiperspirant when sweat is the main issue, following the label and avoiding damaged skin. Persistent heavy sweating can be discussed with a clinician, including Prescription Antiperspirant or Botox For Sweating.

When to seek care

Make an appointment if the smell is new and persistent, does not improve with hygiene, or occurs with itching, scaling, sores, pain, discharge or fever. Seek prompt attention for spreading redness, severe pain or feeling very unwell. The timing, location, triggers and accompanying skin findings help a clinician identify the likely cause and choose appropriate care.

Questions to ask

Could a skin condition be causing this change? Is my sweating excessive for the situation? Could a medicine or product be involved? Which treatment should I try first?

Questions people ask

Does body odour always mean poor hygiene?

No. Puberty, sweating, clothing, skin sensitivity and medical conditions can all affect odour despite regular washing.

Why does odour return after washing?

Sweat production and bacterial activity continue, and damp clothing or excessive sweating can bring the smell back.
