Short answer

An onion-like body odour commonly comes from sweat, skin bacteria, food compounds or damp clothing, but a persistent change merits review.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be behind the smell

Sweat itself is usually not strongly scented. In warm, moist areas such as the underarms, bacteria process sweat and skin oils into odorous compounds. Garlic, onions and strongly flavoured foods may temporarily affect body scent. Exercise, heat, stress, hormonal changes and unwashed sports clothing can intensify it. The smell alone cannot identify one cause, so notice when it started, where it occurs and whether sweating or skin changes accompany it.

Ways to reduce it

Clean the underarms and other sweaty areas gently, rinse well and dry completely. Use fresh shirts, underwear and socks, and wash workout clothing soon after use. An antiperspirant may help when sweat is the main trigger; deodorant can reduce or cover odour. Avoid applying fragranced products to broken or irritated skin. If these measures are not enough, a clinician may discuss Prescription Antiperspirant or Botox For Sweating.

When a check-up helps

Book an appointment when the odour persists after consistent hygiene changes, appears without increased sweating, or is accompanied by itching, redness, scaling, wounds, pain, fever or unusual discharge. A sudden whole-body smell with feeling unwell needs prompt medical attention. Take note of new foods, supplements, medicines and skin products so the clinician can assess the pattern.

Useful questions

Could sweating or a skin infection explain this smell? Could a food, supplement or medicine be contributing? Which product is safe for my skin? What changes would mean I should return?
