Body itching after birth: what to know

Short answer
Body itching postpartum can follow dry skin, hormonal change, a pregnancy rash, contact irritation, or another medical problem, especially if it is severe or continuing.

Why it may happen after delivery
Skin can feel dry after frequent washing, sweating, or disrupted sleep, while a rash that began during pregnancy may take time to settle. New pads, detergents, medicines, adhesives, or breast products can trigger Contact Dermatitis. Atopic Dermatitis, Hives, yeast infection, and scabies are other possibilities; their appearance and treatment differ. Itch near a healing wound, tear, or incision may also reflect irritation, but increasing pain, warmth, swelling, or discharge is not something to ignore.
Gentle postpartum care
Use lukewarm water, pat rather than rub, and apply a fragrance-free moisturiser to intact skin. Choose loose clothing and change damp garments promptly. Wash hands before touching healing areas and follow the wound-care instructions you were given. If you are breastfeeding or taking postpartum medicines, check with a clinician or pharmacist before using an oral antihistamine, medicated cream, or herbal preparation.
Warning signs
Contact your maternity or primary-care team if itch is severe, widespread, persistent, or prevents rest. Get urgent help for facial or tongue swelling, breathing trouble, faintness, extensive blistering, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or a painful wound with pus. Yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, or pale stools also warrants prompt medical assessment.
What to ask
Ask whether the itch fits a postpartum rash, a product reaction, infection, or a medicine effect; which treatments are compatible with feeding your baby; and how to distinguish normal wound irritation from infection.
