Body aching all over: possible causes and next steps

Aching all over is often linked with infection, physical strain, poor sleep, or an ongoing condition, and the accompanying symptoms guide what to do next. Muscle aches may feel sore, heavy, tender, or weak. Note when they began and whether fever, cough, diarrhoea, rash, joint swelling, or unusual tiredness is present.

Influenza and COVID-19 commonly present with body aches alongside respiratory symptoms or fever. Dengue fever, malaria, and brucellosis can also cause aches with fever, especially after relevant travel or animal exposure. Fibromyalgia may cause widespread pain with poor sleep and concentration difficulties. Hypothyroidism can cause muscle discomfort with feeling unusually cold, dry skin, constipation, or low energy. These symptoms overlap, so an ache alone cannot identify a condition.

Rest from strenuous activity, keep gently mobile, drink enough fluid to pass pale urine, and use comfortable heat if it helps. Follow label directions for any pain medicine and check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, have kidney or liver disease, have stomach ulcers, or take regular medicines. If infection is possible, reduce close contact while feverish and monitor changes.

Seek prompt medical advice for severe or worsening pain, persistent fever, a new rash, swollen joints, marked weakness, or aches after travel. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck, inability to keep fluids down, or very little urine.

Tell your doctor where the pain is strongest, what preceded it, your temperature, recent travel, insect bites, sick contacts, new medicines, and any weakness. Ask which examination or tests are appropriate and what changes should trigger urgent review.
