Body aches with skin sensitive to touch: what to know

Skin tenderness without an obvious injury can occur when pain signals become more sensitive during influenza, COVID-19, or another infection. Fibromyalgia can cause widespread pain and sensitivity, often with poor sleep or fatigue. A burning or tingling patch on one side may precede a shingles-like rash and needs timely assessment. Sunburn, medication effects, nerve irritation, and inflammatory conditions are other possibilities. Tender skin does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Wear loose, soft clothing and avoid vigorous rubbing or massage over sensitive areas. Rest, keep hydrated, and use a cool or lukewarm environment if heat aggravates the discomfort. Check the skin daily for redness, blisters, swelling, or colour change. Do not apply unfamiliar creams to broken skin. A pharmacist can help select pain relief if you share your medicines, allergies, pregnancy status, and kidney or stomach conditions.

Get urgent help for weakness on one side, facial drooping, trouble speaking, breathing difficulty, confusion, or a rapidly spreading rash. Arrange prompt medical review for one-sided burning sensitivity, blisters near the eye, severe pain after an injury, numbness, or muscle weakness. Persistent widespread tenderness, sleep disruption, or repeated episodes should also be assessed.

Ask whether the tenderness is more consistent with skin, muscle, or nerve pain and whether an examination is needed. Describe the exact areas, whether clothing or light touch triggers it, when it began, any rash or fever, recent illness, injuries, and medicine changes.
