Body aches and mastitis: what to know

Short answer
Body aches with mastitis can reflect inflammation or infection, especially when breast tenderness, warmth, redness, or flu-like symptoms occur.

What the combination may mean
Mastitis is inflammation of breast tissue and is common during breastfeeding, although it can occur in other circumstances. A blocked milk duct, bacteria entering through a damaged nipple, or another breast problem may be involved. Body aches may appear as part of the body's inflammatory response. Chills, marked tiredness, fever, or a rapidly enlarging red area make infection more concerning, while aches without breast changes may have a separate cause such as influenza or another viral illness. The symptom pattern does not by itself establish mastitis.
What you can do now
Rest, drink fluids, and continue breastfeeding or expressing milk if you are able and it is comfortable; sudden stopping can worsen breast fullness. Feed or express regularly, check that the baby's latch is comfortable, and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods. Avoid forceful massage, tight clothing, and prolonged heat. A clinician can assess whether antibiotics or another treatment is appropriate, particularly if symptoms are worsening or do not start improving.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical assessment for a painful hot or red breast, a firm area that persists, pus or blood in nipple discharge, or symptoms that are getting worse. Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, trouble breathing, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. If you are breastfeeding and feel significantly unwell, contact a clinician the same day.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the breast findings fit mastitis, whether a culture or imaging is needed, and which pain medicines are suitable while breastfeeding. Mention when the aches began, any fever or chills, nipple damage, recent feeding changes, and previous episodes.

Questions people ask
Can mastitis cause body aches without a fever?
Yes. Inflammation may cause aches before a fever appears, and another illness may also explain the symptoms.
Should I stop breastfeeding if I have mastitis?
Usually, continuing feeding or expressing is advised if you can do so comfortably; obtain individual advice if symptoms are severe.
